From Sketch to 3D City: Render Passes & RGB

How do you turn a sketch into 3D?

In our new video, we explain one of the most interesting technical aspects behind the 3D Thessaloniki of the Interwar Period: how render passes work, and how we used RGB channels to give the 3D environment a distinctive, almost hand-drawn visual style.

We wanted to create a city that feels as if it was born out of maps, archives, old photographs, and handwritten historical documents.

Through this process, we were able to create an entire 3D city for the web, with hundreds of buildings, landmarks, and neighborhoods — lightweight enough to run directly in a browser, without requiring any app installation.

Research, 3D design, and technical optimization came together to transform the archive into a living digital space.

The project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and national resources under the “Digital Transformation” Operational Programme 2021–2027 of the Ministry of Digital Governance.
